The Kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus (Spence Bate, 1888) is a valuable penaeid that ranges extensively throughout the Indo-West Pacific, including the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Australia. Although its presence has been noted for the broader Gulf of Oman region, no confirmed and documented record has previously existed for the Iranian coastal waters. During routine coastal monitoring in Konarak County (Birdiv village, Hootak district; Iranian coast of the Gulf of Oman), six specimens of M. japonicus were incidentally captured by local fishers using gillnets at depths of 10–18 m. Identification was conducted following FAO morphological keys. The specimens were distinguished by the characteristic incomplete transverse band on the last abdominal segment, the rostral formula, the structure of the thelycum, and their color pattern. Morphological examination further indicated that all individuals corresponded to form II, distinguished by the brown transverse band on the carapace not reaching the posterior margin. The captured specimens had a mean total length of 20.57 ± 0.82 cm, a mean carapace length of 7.43 ± 0.94 cm, and a mean body weight of 84.88 ± 6.75 g. This study provides the first confirmed record of M. japonicus from Iranian waters. The occurrence of this species extends the western distribution range within the northern Gulf of Oman and suggests a potential commercial presence in local coastal fisheries.
